The Executive Director, Sustainable Gender Action Initiative (SGAI), Ms Mufuliat Fijabi has called for investments in the education, health, safety, and leadership of the girl child for speedy national development.
Fijabi made the call in a statement issued on Saturday to mark the 2025 International Day of the Girl Child with the theme ‘Invest in Girls’ Rights: Our Leadership, Our Wellbeing”
She said that across Nigeria and beyond, millions of girls continue to face barriers to education, safety, healthcare and opportunities for leadership.
According to her, harmful practices such as child marriage, female genital mutilation, gender-based violence and discrimination in access to digital and economic resources hinder their potentials.
“Yet, every day, girls demonstrate resilience, creativity and leadership when given the tools and platforms to thrive.
“We call on governments, communities, civil society and the private sector to invest in girls’ education, health, safety, and leadership as a matter of urgency and justice.
“Girls are not just beneficiaries of change; they are drivers of transformation. When we invest in them, we secure a brighter, fairer and more sustainable future for all,” she said.
The executive director said that SGAI remained proud to stand alongside girls in shaping solutions and leading change.
She said through advocacy, training, and youth-focused initiatives, SGAI continues to amplify their voices, equip them with skills, and create safe spaces where they can learn, innovate and lead.
“Most recently, in partnership with key stakeholders, SGAI has advanced digital advocacy and mentorship programmes that prepare young women and girls to take ownership of their futures, influence policy, and transform their communities.
“As we mark the International Day of the Girl Child 2025, we reaffirm our commitment to breaking barriers and creating equal opportunities for every girl,” she said
