The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on Wednesday, warned drivers plying the highways in Badagry against distracted driving during the ember months and beyond.
Mr Yusuf Sanni, the Unit Commander, Badagry Command gave the warning while flagging-off the Ember Months Public Enlightenment and Sensitisation Campaign in Badagry.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the theme of this year’s campaign is titled: “Take Responsibility For Your Safety, Stop Distracted Driving.”
Sanni said that the 2025 campaign targets drivers who often focus on using their phones or engaging in conversations with passengers while driving.
“The theme emphasises the critical role of human behaviour in road safety.
“Most crashes are caused by driver-related factors such as speeding, fatigue, overloading, and the use of mobile phones while driving.
“Unlike the 2024 campaign which targeted passengers to speak up when they see drivers misleading because they are equally stakeholders inside the vehicle.
‘This year, drivers should take responsibility of driving safely to their destinations,” he said.
According to Sanni, the 2025 campaign will focus on tackling common violations, including reckless driving, alcohol consumption, non-use of seat belts, and other unsafe practices.
He added that the command would engage several strategies such as deploying additional personnel to highways to ensure effective implementation of the campaign .
He said that the command would organise free vehicle safety checks, community engagement through rallies, and town hall meetings.
The commander emphasised the FRSC’s partnerships with key stakeholders, including driving schools and transport unions, to boost driver education and awareness.
He appealed to motorists in Badagry to maintain speed limit on the highways at all times.
NAN reports that the unit commander and his personnel which includes special marshal marched from the unit office to Badagry Roundabout and other parks sensitising the public on need to drive safely during ember months.
