A 28-year-old man, Akororede Azeez, on Friday, appeared before a Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, for allegedly assaulting two police officers on duty.
The defendant whose address was not stated, is standing trial on a two-count charge of assault and causing a breach of peace.
He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The prosecutor, Insp. Ajanaude Yenido, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on Oct.14, at about 8.00.a.m. at the Ilogbo-Eremi area of Badagry.
He alleged that the defendant assaulted one ASP. Stephen Elizode who was on lawful duty in the area, by hitting the officer’s face with his fist.
According to the prosecution, the defendant also assaulted a female police officer, Insp. Feyisayo Dare, who was performing her lawful duties, by hitting her left eye with his fist.
The prosecutor alleged that the defendant also conducted himself in a manner likely to breach public peace, by threatening to burn down the Ilogbo-Eremi police station.
He said that the defendant was consequently arrested, and a charge preferred against him.
The offences contravene the provisions of sections 168 and 171 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The Chief Magistrate, Mr Nurudeen Layeni, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000, with two sureties in like sum.

The court adjourned the case until Nov. 4, for mention.
