Prof. Wasiu Adeyemo, Chief Medical Director, Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), has urged staff of the hospital to remain dedicated and resilient in the face of challenges.
Adeyemo, gave the advice at the 2025 Cultural Day celebration of the institution, held as part of activities marking the ongoing LUTH Week, on Friday in Lagos.
He described the hospital’s staff as “the strength behind its continuous success,” adding that their commitment had kept the institution thriving for over six decades.
Adeyemo said the cultural day provided an opportunity for staff to relax, celebrate their achievements, and promote unity within the hospital community.
“This is 63 years now that the hospital was established, and we need to celebrate our achievements.
“Yes, we know that we have challenges, but one thing is that we do not want those challenges to define us.
“In spite of issues such as the `Japa’ syndrome and remuneration concerns, there is still hope. The Federal Government is doing a lot in terms of infrastructure, and we are also working on improving staff welfare,” he said.
Adeyemo noted that the hospital’s diverse workforce represented nearly every tribe and community in Nigeria, reflecting the spirit of unity in diversity that defines LUTH.
Also speaking, Prof. Babawale Bello, Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee, said the Cultural Day was designed to foster camaraderie and strengthen relationships among staff members.
According to him, the event was part of a weeklong celebration featuring a health walk, symposium, town hall meetings, and games.
“This day is for everyone to unwind, relate with every culture represented in LUTH, and feel as one big family,” Bello said.
Similarly, Mrs Omolola Fakeye, Director of Administration, described the celebration as a symbol of unity and togetherness, noting that it reminded staff of their shared goals beyond their professional roles.
“The essence of this celebration is unity. It reminds us that beyond the hospital environment, we are a family full of hope,” Fakeye said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event featured colourful displays of traditional attires, cultural dances, and local delicacies from various ethnic groups across the country, drawing participation from management, staff, and guests.
