A 45-year-old man, Olayiwola Shoyinka, on Tuesday, appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, for allegedly assaulting a woman.

The defendant, whose address was not provided, is standing trial on a two-count charge bordering on assault and disorderly conduct. He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The prosecutor, SP Josephine Ikhayere, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on August 27, at No. 8, Sulayman Close, around Ogba in Lagos.

She alleged that the defendant assaulted a complainant, one Florence Ehindero, by hitting her on her face and giving her a kick in the stomach.

According to the prosecution, this assault caused the complainant to slump, and was consequently, rushed to the hospital for medical treatment.

She said that the defendant was then arrested by the police.

The offence contravenes the provisions of section 168 and 172 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The Magistrate, Mr Lateef Owolabi, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100,000 with two reliable sureties in like sum.

He, ordered that the sureties must be gainfully employed and must provide verifiable addresses.

The court adjourned the case until Oct. 7, for mention.
