Police Commissioner Olohundare Jimoh has announced a new approach to public safety in Lagos, with a special focus on the energy sector. He announced the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) public lecture. The new strategy is about more than just fighting crime. It’s about building a foundation of security that can support the economy’s ongoing digital transformation.
This new approach emphasizes collaboration and technology. The Lagos police are working more closely with other security agencies like the armed forces and the DSS. The goal is to improve intelligence sharing and coordinate their efforts.
The police are also investing in new technologies. They’re using command-and-control centers that can integrate alerts from smart pipelines and drone surveillance. This shows a commitment to using modern tools to protect critical assets. By partnering with other agencies and embracing technology, the police are creating a stronger, more united security network.
He warned of increasing cyber threats, including digital theft and sabotage targeting energy infrastructure.
Jimoh disclosed that the command’s Cybercrime Unit works with national and international partners to prevent, detect, and respond to such risks.
On infrastructure protection, he cited the Inspector-General’s creation of the Oil Producers’ Guard to secure facilities both physically and digitally.
He further advocated public-private partnerships for advanced digital security, including artificial intelligence, facial recognition, and automated threat detection.
“The command recognises that security is an enabler of economic growth. When businesses feel safe, they invest more, expand more, and create more jobs,” he said.
Jimoh praised the Lagos State Government, led by Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for providing vehicles and security infrastructure through the Lagos State Security Trust Fund.
He also acknowledged the media as critical stakeholders in public sensitisation and crime prevention, pledging to deepen collaboration with journalists for trust and transparency.
Represented by Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mr Fatai Tijani, Jimoh reaffirmed the command’s commitment to professionalism, innovation, and partnership.
