The Women Committee of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Ogun state has elected new executives to oversee its affairs, signaling a renewed focus on gender-based issues within the labor movement. During the election, Comrade Folashade Omoyele of the Ogun Pension Board emerged as the new chairperson of the committee’s women wing.
Other elected officers include Comrade Funmi Olarenwaju and Nurudeen Mariam, both from the Ogun Civil Service, who were elected as vice chairperson and secretary, respectively. The new leadership is tasked with advocating for the rights of female workers, addressing workplace gender disparities, and promoting the political and economic empowerment of women in the state.
Speaking at the event, the Head of Service (HOS), Mr Kehinde Onasanya, challenged the new executives to achieve extraordinary feats. He specifically tasked them with drawing more women into the committee, thereby increasing its influence and ensuring that the needs of female civil servants across the state are effectively represented and addressed
Onasanya, represented by Comrade Jola Oyeneye, Permanent Secretary, Ogun Public Service Transformation Office, stated that the NLC has been very apt in handling industrial disputes
He stressed the importance of constituting a women’s executive, saying it would enhance women active participation in NLC and promote gender equality.
“The HoS said, ” You will agree with me labour dispute that threaten the peace of the state has never occurred and never at a time people threw chairs and tables at themselves because of unresolved labour dispute
“There has not been labour dispute that threatened the peace of the state, and never a time that chairs were thrown at each other in this state because of unresolved issue
“The government of Ogun holds this chapter of NLC with prestige,” he said.
He further urged the losers of the election to accept it in good faith, adding that another opportunity will present itself.
Mr Andy Egboh, Controller, Ministry of Labour and Productivity, Ogun, said the executives’ dedication to build strong community was commendable.
” I encourage you to use this medium to fully participate and make sure your voices are heard,” he said.
The chairman of NLC Ogun, Comrade Ademola Hameed -Benco, commended the women on the successful election and urged members to give their full support.
Hameed- Benco said that the congress operates on a well – structured hierarchy and advised the new excos to respect and uphold the structure at all times
