If Saturday’s by-election in Kano State was a football game between the Nigeria People’s Party and the All Progressives Congress, it was likely to have ended a draw.
The reason is that they have deepened the rivalry between them as they shared victories in the two seats contested.
While the NNPP secured victory in the Bagwai/Shanono State Assembly, the APC won the Ghari/Tsanyawa supplementary poll.
NNPP’s Ali Alhassan emerged as the winner with 16,198 votes, defeating his closest rival from the APC who garnered 5,347 votes.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Returning Officer, Prof. Hassan Shitu, announced the Bagwai/Shanono results on Sunday.
The by-election was necessitated by the death of the former lawmaker representing the constituency, leaving a vacant seat in the Kano State House of Assembly
Meanwhile, according to the Returning Officer, Prof. Muhammad Waziri of Bayero University, the APC candidate Garba Ya’u Gwarmai secured 31,472 votes, defeating his closest rival, Yusuf Ali Maigado of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), who garnered 27,931 votes.
The supplementary election was necessitated by the initial poll being declared inconclusive.
