INEC confirms receipt of sensitive materials for Kogi by-election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Kogi state has confirmed that it has received all sensitive materials required for the upcoming Dekina-Okura II House of Assembly by-election. The materials were collected from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) zonal office in Lokoja.

INEC’s Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Kogi, Mr Oliver Agundu, confirmed the development on Friday through the commission’s Voters Education Officer, Mr Haruna Haliru. He stated that the commission is now ready to begin distributing the materials to the various polling units in the four affected wards to ensure the election proceeds as planned.

The receipt and imminent distribution of these critical materials mark the final stage of preparations, demonstrating INEC’s readiness to conduct the by-election scheduled for Saturday.

“The Dekina-Okura II state constituency has a total of 78,059 registered voters, out of which 76,385 had collected their Permanent Voter Cards and are ready for the election, ” he said.

The REC  said that only five out of the 18 registered political parties are contesting in the election.

He listed the parties as  Accord, African Democratic Congress,  All Progressives Congress, Allied People’s Movement, and the  People’s Democratic Party.

The REC  expressed satisfaction with the deployment of security operatives and observers for the election.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the by-election was fixed to replace the lawmaker representing the constituency, Enema Paul,  who died on Dec.14, 2024.

The late lawmaker was the deputy speaker of the house.

He,  however, assured all stakeholders in the constituency of a free, fair, transparent and credible election.
