Two men, Samuel Komolafe, 24, and Tomiwa Operinmade, 19, have appeared before an Iyaganku Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan on a charge of unlawful possession of live cartridges. The defendants, who did not provide a residential address, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The prosecutor, Inspector Samuel Owolabi, informed the court that the alleged offense was committed on july 30 at approximately 3:45 p.m. at Agodi Gardens, a public recreational area in the city. The charge specifies that the defendants were found in unlawful possession of four live cartridges.
Following their plea, the chief magistrate subsequently granted the defendants bail and adjourned the case for further hearing. This legal action marks a continued effort by authorities to address issues of illegal firearm possession and enhance security in the state capital.
Owolabi said that the police caught the defendants during a stop and search routine with the live cartridges and some items suspected to be charms.
He said that the defendants could not give any satisfactory reason why they were with the cartridges.
The prosecutor said the offence contravened Section 417 (D) of the Criminal Law of Oyo State, 2000.
Chief Magistrate G. T. Oladele granted the defendants bail in the sum of N200,000 each, with two sureties in like sum.
The case was adjourned until Sept. 10 for mention.
