The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to delivering quality education to every Nigerian child, following the impressive win of three students from Yobe at the 2025 TeenEagle Global Competition in London.
The students, Nafisa Aminu, Rukayya Muhammad, and Hadiza Kalli, won top positions in English language skills, overall debate, and productive communication.
At a reception organised in their honour on thursday in Abuja, the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, said, “simply put, our mandate is to ensure that every single child in Nigeria gets the highest quality of education.” The students’ success has placed Nigeria and Africa on the global map of academic excellence.
“What we are celebrating here today is evidence that with the right policies, mentorship, and community support, our children can compete with the best in the world,” he said.
Alausa commended Gov. Mai Mala Buni of Yobe for prioritising education and urged other governors to emulate the model.
He added that the number of out-of-school children in Nigeria, once among the highest globally, had begun to decline through vigorous interventions in the last 24 months.
Prof. Abba Idris, Yobe Commissioner of Basic Education, called the victory “a triumph of resilience” albeit years of insurgency that crippled learning in the state.
He said Yobe had reconstructed over 300 schools, established 15 mega and model schools and eight new girls’ senior secondary schools, while also recruiting more than 5,000 teachers and training 9,452 others.
The commissioner further listed the provision of 85,000 classroom furniture sets, 627 classrooms, 119 staff quarters, and heavy investments in school feeding, scholarships, free exam fees, and tertiary education support.
“Over N4 billion has been spent on school feeding, N3 billion on WAEC, NECO and other exam fees this year alone, and N2.2 billion on scholarships at Nigeria Tulip International College, which produced today’s champions,” Idris said.
He noted that over 40,000 Yobe indigenes are currently studying in tertiary institutions locally and abroad on government sponsorship, while tuition fees remain among the most affordable in the country, ranging from N9,000 to N56,000.
Responding, Nafisa Aminu, overall first-place winner, said the achievement reflected Yobe’s massive investment in education.
She thanked President Bola Tinubu, the Yobe Government and the Federal Ministry of Education for their support.
