The Edo Parole Board has concluded its hearing for 13 inmates from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Benin, who applied for parole.
The board, which is chaired by retired Justice Alero Edodo-Eruaga, reviewed the applications on wednesday, after an initial session held last week.
Mr Aminu Suleman, the Public Relations Officer for the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), said in a statement that five of the 13 shortlisted inmates were already undergoing interviews to determine their eligibility for early release.
He said the review process focused on inmates’ good behavior, productivity while in custody, evidence of reformation and rehabilitation, as well as their concrete plans for reintegration into society.
”This process is about giving a second chance while ensuring public safety.
”Our responsibility is to balance justice with rehabilitation in line with the Nigerian Correctional Service Act 2019,” he quoted Eruaga as saying.
He added that the board would forward its final recommendations to the Commander General of the NCoS, Sylvester Nwakuche for the next phase of approval.
The Edo NCoS image maker noted that parole went beyond the inmates themselves, as it benefits not only those seeking a second chance but also contributes to safer communities and a stronger nation.
He disclosed that other members of the board include representatives from the correctional service, the Director of Public Prosecutions, and professionals from PRAWA.
”There were also representatives from the Association of Psychiatrists in Nigeria, the Nigerian Psychological Association, the Association of Medical Social Workers, and Edo Civil Society Organisation (EdoCSO),” Suleman said.
