The convener of the World Hausa Day in Daura, Katsina, Abdulbaqi Jari, has called for the adoption of Hausa as a communication medium across ECOWAS member countries.
Jari made the appeal during a press briefing on Monday in Katsina, ahead of the 2025 World Hausa Day celebrations scheduled for August 26 in Daura.
He also urged the Federal Government to recognize Hausa as Nigeria’s national language, stressing that its wide reach and numerical strength qualify it to function effectively as a unifying language.
“This is a matter of linguistic and cultural independence for African people,” he said.
Jari noted that several African countries have recognised indigenous languages, giving them support to promote pride, identity, and effective communication among their citizens.
He maintained that Hausa fits into this category, as the language is widely spoken, not only in Nigeria, but across many West African countries within ECOWAS.
According to him, adopting Hausa would strengthen communication, trade, commerce, and social interaction across the region.
He invited Nigerians interested in culture and history to visit Daura during the celebrations to experience authentic Hausa heritage and traditions.
Jari emphasised the need for security consciousness, noting that Daura remains the centre and birthplace of Hausa civilisation.
He confirmed that preparations for the event, including venue arrangements, security, and government support, had been completed in collaboration with the Daura Emirate Council.
“We remind participants, especially travellers, to be security conscious, journey during daytime, and familiarise themselves with the environment before arrival,” Jari added.
He expressed gratitude to partners, particularly the Katsina State Government and the Daura Emirate Council, for their support toward the success of the celebration.
The committee also commended the Minister of Arts, Culture, Tourism and Creativity, Hajiya Hannatu Musawa, for her dedication and commitment to cultural promotion.
