The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a suspected armed robber and recovered an AK-49 rifle and other weapons during an intelligence-led operation.
Command spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the arrest in a statement issued on Tuesday in Lagos.
According to Hundeyin, detectives from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) carried out a coordinated raid on July 15 at a known criminal hideout in the Ajegunle area of Ikorodu, acting on credible intelligence.
He said the operation led to the arrest of the suspect and the recovery of an AK-49 rifle, several rounds of ammunition, and other items linked to violent crimes.
Hundeyin noted that investigations are ongoing and reaffirmed the command’s commitment to curbing armed robbery and other violent crimes across the state.
He urged residents to remain vigilant and continue to provide timely information that can assist law enforcement agencies in their crime-fighting efforts.
“During the operation, the team apprehended the suspect in possession of one AK-49 assault rifle, three magazines, 15 rounds of 7.62x39mm ammunition, three rounds of 9mm (K2) ammunition, and two rounds of 7.62x51mm ammunition,” he said.
The spokesperson said that investigation revealed that the suspect was deeply engaged in armed robbery and illegal land acquisition operations.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect had been actively involved in armed robbery and land-grabbing activities across various parts of the state, using the recovered firearm to perpetrate his crimes.
“Further investigations revealed that the suspect has accomplices, ” the image maker said.
According to him, efforts are being intensified to apprehend other members of the criminal syndicate and to charge all involved to court at the conclusion of the investigations.
He said that the state Commissioner of Police, Mr Olohundare Jimoh, commended the officers for their quick action.
“CP Jimoh commended the SCID for their professionalism and swift action.
“The CP also reiterates the command’s unwavering commitment to proactive, intelligence-led policing and warns criminal elements that Lagos will remain a hostile environment for unlawful activities, ” Hundeyin said.
