The Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Dr Kayode Opeifa, has pledged to transform Nigeria’s railway system through improved staff welfare, training, and enhanced infrastructure.

Opeifa made the commitment on Saturday during a working visit to the NRC Northern District Headquarters in Zaria, Kaduna State, where he assessed operational facilities.

In a statement issued by Mr Callistus Unyimadu, NRC’s Deputy Director of Public Affairs, Opeifa said the transformation would boost efficiency and service delivery.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Opeifa met district staff, inspected installations, and reviewed projects aligned with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

He also engaged with staff, the Nigerian Union of Railwaymen (NUR), the Senior Staff Association (SSA), pilot drivers in training, and pensioners.

Touring facilities like the NRC Training School, District Clinic, Central Workshop, and Permanent Ways Hotel, he commended the staff managing these institutions.

He stressed the need for urgent upgrades and modernisation to enhance service delivery, staff welfare, and professional capacity development.

“To transform the railway system, we must invest in our people—their health, training, and supporting infrastructure,” Opeifa said.

He assured pensioners that outstanding payments are being addressed and urged them to stay calm as steps are underway to resolve all issues.

“We understand the value of pensions and will do all within our power to ensure retirees receive what is rightfully theirs,” he added.

Opeifa highlighted the Northern District’s strategic role in linking cities, boosting trade, and supporting agriculture and regional economic growth.

“We are committed to revitalising railways nationwide, and Zaria is a key hub in this process.

“Our goals are efficiency, safety, and sustainability, to ensure the NRC meets modern transport demands,” Opeifa said.

Responding, the Railway District Manager for Zaria, Mr Adedeji Adewala Rasheed, appreciated the visit and pledged support for the corporation’s vision.

“We are honoured by your presence and assure you of our district’s commitment to your transformative agenda.

“The Iron Men of Zaria stand behind you and will work tirelessly to realise your objectives,” Rasheed added.

The visit underscores the NRC’s dedication to strengthening ties with regional offices and delivering world-class railway services across Nigeria.
