The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has extended a compassionate hand to those impacted by the devastating recent flood disaster in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State. In a heartfelt gesture of solidarity, CAN has generously donated essential food items to the survivors.
During the presentation of these crucial supplies, held at the office of Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba in Minna on Wednesday, CAN President Archbishop Daniel Okoh conveyed profound sorrow. He spoke of the immense scale of destruction unleashed by the floods, emphasizing the deep empathy felt for those who have endured such loss.
Represented by the association’s Vice President, Rev. Dr Stephen Panya, the president said the association shared in the pains inflicted on the affected communities.
He called on various groups and governments to see the tragic incident “as a reminder of their collective responsibility to support one another in times like this.”
Okoh observed that the donation of food items was a demonstration of love and solidarity with the victims, especially those directly affected by the disaster.
“We are here to express our heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Niger, particularly the Mokwa region and those who lost their relatives, homes and property.
“CAN as a body, our efforts are aimed at complementing the interventions of the Federal and State Governments, emergency agencies, well-meaning Nigerians, and other humanitarian partners.
“We will continue to lift the state in our prayers just as the Book of Psalm 146:1 says, ‘God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble,” he said.
Receiving the items on behalf of the Deputy Governor, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Mrs Mairo Mohammed-Mann, commended CAN for the gesture and assured that the relief items would be properly utilised.
The permanent secretary said the state government had already redeemed its pledge of one billion Naira and had also commenced the disbursement of one million Naira to each of the affected household.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the items donated include; 20 bags of maize, 20 bags of guinea corn and five bags of beans.
Present at the event were; the state Vice Chairman CAN, Rev. Marcus Joshua and other CAN executives in the state as well as the Director-General of Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), Abdullahi Baba-Arah.
