Police arraign domestic staff for allegedly stealing neighbour’s N200,000
Thanks to the CCTV that exposed the deed, a domestic employee has been arrested and arraigned by the police for allegedly stealing N200,000 in Abuja.
The police on Tuesday arraigned the man, Magrate Sunday, before a Life Camp Chief Magistrates’ Court Abuja..
The police charged Sunday, 19, of 63 Road 6th Avenue Gwarinpa Abuja, with criminal trespass and theft.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The Prosecution counsel, Mrs Charity Nwachukwu, told the court that on June 6 the complainant, Nwosu Nkiruka of the same address reported the matter at the Galadima police station.
Nwachukwu said that on June 3, the complainant was cooking and her cooking gas finished, she removed N20,000 from the N100,000 she kept under her pillow to enable her buy gas.
She said while the complainant was on her way back, the defendant called her and told her to pass through the main gate while entering the compound and not to use her key to open the small gate.
The prosecutor said that when the complainant came back, she discovered that her window net was sliced to a different direction and she quickly went to check her money.
Nwachukwu claimed that the defendants, a domestic staff in the complainant’s compound passed through the complainant’s window and made away with N40,000 from money she kept under her pillow.
He said that the complainant also on May 19, the defendant trespassed into her room and broke her wooden saving box and made away with her N160,000.
She said that the complainant informed the landlord to play the close circuit television camera in the compound, alleging that it was the device that exposed the defendant.
She said that later the landlord and other members of the compound came and pleaded with her not to take the matter to police station and promised to settle the matter.
The prosecutor said all efforts made for the complainant to recover her N200,000 proved abortive stating that she strongly suspected the defendant of her stolen money.
She said that during police investigation the defendant could not give a satisfactory account of his action, and all efforts made to recover the money failed.
Nwachukwu claimed that the offence contravened the provision of Sections 342 and 288 of the panel code.
The Chief magistrate, Mr Musa Jobbo admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N200,000 and a surety in like sum.
Jobbo stated that the surety must reside within the jurisdiction of the court and adjourned the case until July 30 for hearing.
