A former Governor of Kano State, Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, reacted to the death of 21 athletes from the state, who were involved in a road crash while returning from the National Sports Festival in Ogun State.

According to him,it is heartbreaking to be confronted with the tragic news.

Shekarau described the incident as a devastating loss not just to the affected families but to the entire state in a statement issued on Saturday by his spokesperson, Sule Sule,

He extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, the government, and the people of Kano State.

“As the state awaits the return of these patriotic sons who made Kano proud at the recently concluded National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, it is heartbreaking to be confronted with such tragic news,” the statement read in part.

Shekarau noted that while the tragedy was painful, there was a measure of consolation in the fact that the young athletes died in service to the state.

“They met their death while on a state assignment, representing Kano with dignity and honour. This is a painful reminder of the risks our youth take in pursuit of excellence,” he said.

Shekarau prayed for the repose of the souls of the deceased and asked the Almighty to comfort their families and give them the strength to bear the irreparable loss.

The fatal accident occurred as the contingent was returning from the National Sports Festival, which held in Abeokuta, Ogun State. Authorities in Kano have since commenced arrangements to receive the remains of the deceased.
