In a time when insecurity casts long shadows across communities, a new initiative in Abuja is shedding light—literally and symbolically—on how residents can seek help in moments of distress.
The Rotary Club of Abuja, Central Business District, in collaboration with the Nigeria Police, has unveiled a security help signage aimed at guiding citizens during emergencies. Located in a strategic public space, the sign is more than just directions—it’s a symbol of civic responsibility and community care.
District Governor Rotarian Mike Nwanoshiri described the project as a step toward both safety and solidarity. “With this signage, we want to raise awareness of the club’s humanitarian efforts worldwide and to highlight the excellent work the Nigeria Police are doing to protect lives and property,” he said at Tuesday’s unveiling.
In a city where uncertainty often silences action, this simple structure now stands as a beacon—reminding residents that help is near, and that they are not alone.
He added, “In emergencies or cases of insecurity, the signage provides all the phone numbers to call.
“The Police are your friends, get the numbers and call them whenever you need assistance.”
In spite of economic challenges, he stressed that Rotary remained committed to doing more for the people.
Nwanoshiri further explained that similar signage would be installed at all entry routes into Abuja and urged residents to respect and keep the signs clean.
The President of the Rotary Club Abuja CBD, Rotarian Katherine Adamu, noted that funding was a challenge but emphasised that Rotary’s mission was to combine resources to help humanity.
She appealed to well-meaning Nigerians to support efforts to aid the less privileged.
“The signage also includes information about our meeting times and locations. With more than 50 Rotary clubs in Abuja, this will help raise public awareness,” Adamu said.
She added that the project was done in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Complaint Response Unit to assist people who might not know where to seek help during emergencies.
“This will enable many people to call for assistance when needed,” she said.
Also speaking, the District Governor of District 9112 from Lagos, Rotarian Olufemi Adenikan, commended the signage project and urged it be replicated nationwide.
“It is important for citizens to know where to get help when necessary. We want to thank the Nigeria Police for making Abuja convenient, peaceful, and safe,” Adenikan said.
