Police in Rivers State have launched investigation into the death of one of their men, Inspector Maxwell Zabu, who has shot himself dead.
There is puzzle as it is not yet clear whether it was a suicide case or the action was accidental or a product of possible intoxication.
The spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, Superintendent of Police Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident, stating that it is suspected that the Police officer k!lled himself.
Only last month, tragedy had similarly struck in Calabar, Cross River State, when another police inspector opened fire near Atakpa Police Station along Watt Market Road, killing one person and injuring two others.
Eyewitnesses recounted that the inspector had just returned from duty but refused to surrender his rifle, exhibiting erratic behaviour.
As fellow officers attempted to disarm him, he allegedly began shooting indiscriminately.
One civilian died instantly, while two others sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment.
In the Zabu’s case which happened on Tuesday, April 22, however, he allegedly shot himself d3ed in his room at the Eagle Island residence of a former Chairman of Port Harcourt Local Government Area, Hon. Victor Ihunwo.
The incident happened in the early hours of Tuesday, April 22, 2025.
Until his d3ath, Zabu served as an orderly and close aide to Ihunwo.
However, the command said it is still investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The state Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, has directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID), Port Harcourt, for a detailed investigation.
