Nigerian rapper Erigga on Thursday stirred up a controversy with a judgement he passed on relationships in Nigeria.
During an interview on Cool FM Lagos, he stated that many Nigerian women date men out of survival, not love.
The interview was aired live on Cool FM and clips began trending shortly after on Twitter and Instagram.
He said, “In Nigeria, dating is more about survival than love. It’s the harsh reality many face.”
The comment quickly went viral, sparking debates online. While some agreed, others criticised his stance as stereotypical and insensitive.
Several relationship coaches have responded, highlighting economic realities that influence relationship dynamics in Nigeria.
As of now, Erigga has not issued any follow-up statements, and reactions continue to pour in.
The conversation is still trending under hashtags like #EriggaSpeaks and #DatingInNigeria.
Perhaps the question that need be asked is: What do Nigerian women date for?
Or what do the majority of them date for?
Is it money? Love? Marriage? Influence? Sex? Or big organs?
The last factor sounds vulgar but it is not unusual to hear many women emphasise it.
The only question is what happens when other things – like money – are missing in the mix.
