The 20th of September, 2024 is a day some corps members (including me) will not forget in a hurry. We were taken through a revealing news writing workshop led by Mr Akeem Lasisi, a language columnist at ‘The Punch’ and Publisher of Phenomenal.com.ng.
The event held at Great Value Classic School, Ibafo, Ogun State, with the enriching experience providing invaluable guidance on crafting captivating news. In this course, I will share takeaways from the session on news writing.
What is News?
Lasisi noted that one must first of understand the meaning of the word ‘news’, which is fresh information usually of interest; i.e something one has not heard before. According to him, this understanding should guide a reporter on what to write on.
News Components
The publisher also highlighted the elements of a news report in terms of the title which is usually written in present tense. He also talked about questions that should be answered by the piece: ‘Who?’ ‘Where?’ ‘When?’ ‘Why?’ and ‘How?’
Clear Presentation
Lasisi further noted that the news should be presented in a simple and clear language, with each sentence constituting a paragraph in many cases.
Good images are a boost, according to him, adding that any claim made should be backed or supported with facts just as the reporter’s opinion should not be included. He advised the cops members to to avoid libel.
In another part of the programme, Lasisi encouraged them to share their post-service plans. It was a very interesting experience hearing them do this:
Corper Funmi Ipaye noted that she wanted to further her professionalism by continuing with her ICAN exams while she also aspires for a master’s programme abroad.
Oreoluwa Adejumo hopes to start her branding in the ceramic field, but with her mind on a good paying job to help capitalise the business idea.
Israel Aiyedogbon also said he wants to further his education by applying for a Master’s degree programme. I went on to also mention my ambition to develop my graphic design skills extensively.
In conclusion, Mr Lasisi’s expert guidance has significantly enhanced my understanding of news waiting and I’m grateful for the opportunity.
