From his globally revered height, Pastor E A Adeboye has humbled himself before the world.
This he did by admitting a mistake he recently made while preaching, when he said whoever failed to pay tithe would not make heaven.
Like almost every other issue around tithing, the statement had sparked controversies even as some other leading pastors, including Sam Adeyemi of Daystar, played down the place of the ageless offering in Christendom.
But in a way that proves that only God is infallible, Adeboye declared before a youth congregation that what he said was not correct, and that holiness and one’s relationship with fellow men are the yardsticks that God would use to admit people to heaven.
He said, “I want to be apologising for making a mistake, for saying that if you don’t pay tithe, you might not make it to heaven. Sorry, that’s wrong, That’s not in the bible. What the bible says is ‘be at peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see God.'”
Although the cleric raised some other controversial issues around the subject, saying people should endeavour to pay more than 10 per cent as they rise, one salutes him for the courage in leadership and owning up.
Meanwhile, he yet added: “It is wrong to limit you to ten percent. Ten percent should be for beginners,” he added, saying some people should be paying “20 percent, 30 percent.”
