There is consolation for Chelsea as their Cole Palmer has been named the PFA Young Player of the Year for the 2023/24 season.
Chelsea performed uninspiringly last year and they have also started off poorly this EPL season – losing 2-0 to Man City.
But the 22-year-old has picked his first major individual honour and followed in the footsteps of some of the Premier League’s greats, including Gareth Bale, Dele Alli and Wayne Rooney.
Palmer netted 22 goals last season, including a hat-trick against Manchester United and four against Everton and provided 11 assists that made struggling Chelsea move to sixth place on the table.
No player in the Premier League registered more goal involvements than Palmer, who forced his way into the England squad for Euro 2024 by establishing himself as one of the division’s most dangerous player scoring in the Euro 2024 final against Spain.
Palmer comes out on top of a shortlist which also included Alejandro Garnacho (Manchester United), Kobbie Mainoo (Manchester United), Michael Olise (Crystal Palace, now Bayern Munich), Joao Pedro (Brighton and Hove Albion) and last year’s winner, Bukayo Saka (Arsenal).
Palmer was handed the award by Blues legend Gianfranco Zola at the Manchester Opera House on Tuesday evening.
