Super vocalist, Timi Dakolo, has emphasised self conviction as a major yardstick for an artiste to gauge the quality of their music.
According to him, they should see themselves as the first consumers and thus give the work the right taste.
His position will remind lovers of fuji legend Sikiru Ayinde Barrister’s assertion in one of his albums in which he says ‘B’eeyan ba n korin b’orin naa o dun/Se bo n f’eti ara re gbo/Ohun a n je ko la n ta/Kii s’owe t’omo oni gaari pa’.
This roughly means when someone is producing a bad song, they should be able to assess such with their own ears. Afterall, a garri seller should be able to practically determine the taste.
Dakolo averred in a recent podcast: “You are the first person to play it, the idea is yours, the motivation was yours, and the core of it was presented to you so the first person that encounters that idea is you. If you’re doing it for people then you are missing the whole point. A good product convinces the people. It speaks louder than asking people to come and hear your music. If the product is good people will embrace it.
