Seasoned dramatist, Professor Rasaki Ojo Bakare, has commended Theatre Arts students of Bowen University, Iwo, who took part in the performance of Ekun Omi at the institution.
Ekun Omi, written by Ojo Bakare, was on stage at the university on May 24 and 25, courtesy of Thespian Family Theatre and Productions, which collaborated with the university as part of its drive to call attention to the health of the environment. The troupe founded by Mrs Ayo Jaiyesimi sponsored the production and will do same in 11 other universities across the country, with other plays variously addressing environmental issues.
Speaking on the success of the show, Ojo Rasaki said it really achieved the target as it drew many members of the university community and beyond to the stage. According to him, the production also gave the students a vital experience in terms of participating in a workshop play, especially one that addresses a major issue that affects society.
The former Director General of the Abuja Carnival said, “In the first place, the project helped us to awaken people’s love for live theatre. Theatre has come back, we know. But every opportunity to attract more people to the stage is very important. Also, it helped to call the audience’s attention to the evil of pollution. At the same time, the performance helped to showcase the students’ talents and expose them collaborative theatre for a purpose. That is why our kudos goes to Mrs Ayo Jaiyesimi for the initiative and support. With the production, Thespian Family Theatre has demonstrated that universities and institutions outside have to come together to prosecute the cause of humanity.”
Ojo Rasaki commended the students for their performance, hoping that they would always build on the promise they showcased.
Meanwhile, Jaiyesimi too has expressed delight and fulfilment at the outcome of the project.
According to her, it has further inspired Thespian Family Theatre to see it through to the 11 other universities.
