Mrs. Enyoanwan Otu, the wife of Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River, unveiled 120 renovated stalls at the renowned Akim Market in Calabar. The inauguration took place as part of the celebrations marking the governor’s wife’s 60th birthday on Tuesday in Calabar. Mrs. Otu emphasized that the stall renovations were aligned with her husband’s “People First” philosophy, aimed at enhancing the trading environment and improving the lives of Calabar residents who utilize the market.
She expressed that the revitalization and modernization of these market structures were intended to address the challenges faced by both traders and customers. The redesigned Akim Market stalls prioritize functionality, safety, and convenience, fostering a conducive environment for commerce and trade to flourish.
During the inauguration, His Royal Majesty (HRM) Ndidem Eta Bassey Eteta (III), the Paramount Ruler of Calabar Municipality, hailed the remodeled stalls as a welcomed development. He appreciated Mrs. Otu’s commitment to the Akim community and Calabar Municipality, noting her genuine concern for the welfare of the people.
Dr. Felix Idem, the Commissioner for Local Government Affairs, also commended Mrs. Otu for her benevolent gesture, affirming her enduring legacy of genuine care and support for the Akim community.
The event included presentations of gifts by the Market Women Association, cultural performances, and the cutting of Mrs. Otu’s 60th birthday cake.
