Grammys winner, Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, aka Burna Boy, has sought to downgrade his colleague, Brymo, as a musician.
According to him, all he does is sing ‘Yoruba proverbs’ which, Burna believes, are like exclusive preserve of popular fuji musicians, Wasiu Ayinde and Saheed Osupa.
This is in response to a declaration by Brymo, during a podcast, that he can never sign onto his (Burna’s) label and that of Wizkid.
“I would rather go to hell than sign to Wizkid, Davido or Burna Boy,” he said.
Besides, Brymo previously accused Burna Boy of stealing an unreleased song that allegedly served as inspiration for his songs “City Boy” and “I told you”.
The latter then responded by throwing shade at Brymo during a live freestyle, encouraging others to work hard to avoid falling off like him.
Burna, who refers to himself as King, stated that everyone was eager to do or say anything to get at him.
According to him, the other singer exclusively performs Yoruba music proverbs.
“At this point, they do and say anything to get at the KING.
Werey dey sing Yoruba proverb music for us When K1 and Saheed Osupa dem still dey carry us trabaye.”
While many may readily understand Burna Boy’s argument, some will not agree that his seeming suggestion that music built on Yoruba idioms have no shining place in the world.
Such people will not only remember that a King Sunny Ade is a globally acclaimed Yoruba musician, but also that multiple award-winning Angelique Kidjo has her artistry built on Yoruba songs and ‘proverbs’.
Also, Yoruba nuances are an integral part of the reigning afrobeats.
