A security expert, Dr Abdullahi Jabi says addressing unemployment and other social issues in the society will greatly reduce the scale of insecurity in the country.
Jabi who is the Secretary-General, International Institute of Professional Security, gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.
“Insecurity can’t abate for now because of several factors. Some are deliberate while some are not.
“Some are as a result of unemployment and social problems, while some are as a result of compromise by some security agencies.
”So, with all these problems rearing their ugly heads, it can’t abate for now.”
He however said the Federal Government should boost the manpower needs of the security forces and provide them with the necessary equipment and training to face the security challenges more effectively.
”Until all these issues are addressed frontally and people are placed on job security, we can’t make headway in addressing these problems, because to me, that is what is largely fueling it,” Jabi said.
He also stressed the need for parents to communicate well with their children and talk to them against engaging in any action inimical to the peace and stability of the society.
”If a child is a drug addict for instance, the next thing he or she does is to think of engaging in crime and criminality.”
Jabi said government and the private sector should create opportunities for graduates and other young people to engage in meaningful ventures.
According to him, idleness usually predisposes young people to crime.
”There are graduates of 10 years who have no opportunity of job placements, there are also graduates of eight years and so on who are roaming the streets jobless.
”Unfortunately, it’s only when you have a very good link that you are sure of getting a job, which is not good for any country, especially Nigeria.
”To worsen the whole thing, a very good number of them who are fortunate enough are mostly employed on casual basis, which is against labour laws.
“So, our governments must ensure that these social problems are addressed,” he added.
Jabi is of the opinion that government should stop wasting public resources in prosecuting bandits, kidnappers, and insurgents.
”The law must also be seen to be biting now. For example, if anybody is found on the scene of crime and arrested, there is no point taking the person to the correctional facility or police station.
‘’That person should be executed primarily to serve as a deterrent to others who may want to commit same crime,” he added
