The Nigerian and Angolan governments have formally come together to strengthen water supply and electricity generation within their respective territories. This collaborative initiative was solidified during a crucial meeting between Dr. Jose Bamoquina, the Angolan Ambassador to Nigeria, and Prof. Joseph Utsev, the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, along with his state counterpart in Abuja.
During the meeting, Utsev stressed the importance of this partnership, highlighting the need for both nations to exchange technical expertise and knowledge in vital sectors. The primary focus was on improving citizens’ lives through advancements in water supply and hydropower generation.
Recognizing the importance of global support in achieving universal access to clean water, Utsev welcomed an invitation from Bamoquina to visit Angola and strengthen the partnership across various mutually beneficial areas.
The Angolan Ambassador outlined the objective of his visit, emphasizing the desire for increased collaboration to leverage the abundant mineral resources—particularly water and electricity—in both countries. He highlighted Angola’s potential to export electricity and plans to expand and efficiently utilize major dams with Nigeria’s technical expertise to provide potable water and enhance irrigation farming.
The Federal government, represented by Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, reiterated its commitment to deepening bilateral relations between Angola and Nigeria. Both countries share membership in the Non-Aligned Movement and the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration is keen on bolstering ties with other African nations, including Angola, to support their domestic and foreign aspirations. Nigeria is committed to supporting Angola’s overall development and expects reciprocity in return, as the progress of one country benefits all.
Idris highlighted that both Nigeria and Angola are rich in natural resources, particularly oil and gas, which serve as significant revenue sources. As the largest producers of crude oil in Africa, they are regarded as ‘big brothers’ on the continent, with high expectations placed upon them.
