Former Emir Muhammadu Sanusi has brushed aside objections raised by Northern politicians, labeling them as mere “noise.” According to Sanusi, the relocation of the CBN is not a regional matter but a principled decision that should be upheld.

Sanusi advised CBN Governor Yemi Cardoso to consider individual situations, particularly mentioning mothers with children and those facing medical issues. He emphasized the importance of empathy in implementing the relocation, stating, “Individual situations should be considered. As much as possible, we should be empathetic. For example, young mothers with kids in school who do not need to move can be prioritized to stay in Abuja or those with medical conditions, etc.”

Cautioning against political pressure, Sanusi urged Governor Cardoso to proceed with the relocation policy, emphasizing that yielding to such pressure could set a precedent for interference in the CBN’s decisions.

Reflecting on past experiences, Sanusi recounted facing religious objections when licensing Jaiz Bank, but he stood firm on his decision despite the noise. He highlighted the need to maintain principles and not succumb to external pressures.

Sanusi also pointed out that similar religious objections occurred when a Christian governor, succeeding him, licensed at least two more non-interest banks without significant controversy, emphasizing the importance of consistency in decision-making.
