Gov. Agbu Kefas of Taraba, on Monday promised to consider all welfare demands of retired members of the armed forces in the state.
Kefas made the declaration at the 2024 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day in Jalingo.
He said that the sacrifices of the fallen heroes would not be in vain, and so urged for public support for families of fallen heroes and retired members of the armed forces.
The governor, who is also a retired army officer, commended the Nigerian Army for its relentless efforts in responding to insecurity threats in the state.
He expressed his commitment to the support of security agencies in the state so as to achieve a crime free society.
Earlier, W/O Nuhu Samaila (Rtd), Chairman of the Legion in the state, said that many retirees were still active.
Samaila said that members of the legion could still work as security personnel, and urged the government to consider them in such areas.
He also appealed to the state government to support the organisation to complete its secretariat, provide a vehicle and provide them with monthly running-cost, to enable the legion operate efficiently.
While thanking the governor for identifying with them, Samaila appealed to the public to also support widows of fallen heroes in the state.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that the 2024 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance commenced with Jumaat prayers on Friday.
The Muslim prayers were followed by a Thanksgiving interdenominational service at the Anglican Cathedral in Jalingo.
NAN further reports that the highpoint of the event was the laying of wreath on Monday, which was attended by all the first class traditional rulers, top government officials and senior military commanders in the state.
The Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day is a day set aside to honour fallen heroes of the Nigerian Armed Forces.
The Commander of the 6 Brigade Nigerian Army, Maj.-Gen. Frank Etim, was the Chief Host.
