The Lagos State Government has approved the establishment of insurance club in the state’s public secondary schools.
Mr Ademola Olutusin, Chairman, Nigerian Council of Registered Insurance Brokers (NCRIB), Lagos Area Committee (LAC), disclosed this at the NCRIB-LAC, 20th Anniversary on Tuesday in Lagos.
The event also included the council committee’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) and End of Year Lecture.
The theme of lecture is: “Importance of the Local Chapters to the Growth of the Centre”.
Olutusin said that the approval was granted, following a request written by the brokers to the state government.
According to him, it is in a bid to catch the young scholars interest for insurance as a subject and deepen insurance penetration.
He expressed worry that insurance as an integral sector of the economy is not taught in most schools in Nigeria, just as the educational system is challenged with the dearth of professional insurance teachers.
According to him, NCRIB-LAC in its mission to increase insurance penetration, especially at the grassroot, also donated insurance books, publications and material to some government schools and organised inter-school competition recently.
Olutusin said that Lagos state students wouldb write Insurance as a subject in the next West Africa Examination Council (WAEC).
He explained that discussion between the area committee, various secondary schools and the Lagos State Government on the provision of teachers to teach Insurance in the state’s curriculum had reached the final stage.
According to him, NCRIB-LAC have recorded remarkable history of accomplishments within its 20 years of establishment.
The NCRIB chairman listed some of area committee’s accomplishment as: the development and execution of market awareness programmes, aimed at driving businesses to member companies.
Olutusin said the area committee had been sensitising the insuring public on the advantages of insurance and engaging with relevant government agencies on insurance issues.
He said these engagements, among others attracted business transactions for the brokers and translated to income for member companies.
“With such track record of success, the LAC will face increasing demand and pressure, but we are blessed with members with power, integrity and goodwill to overcome all challenges, “he said.
In his address, NCRIB’s President, Prince Babatunde Oguntade, expressed his joy on an astonishing milestone of two decades attained by the area committee, where he had also served as the fifth chairman.
Oguntade commended the effort of the past executives of the area committee for the innovative, collaborative spirit and selflessness that laid the foundation of achievements for which the committee proudly celebrates.
He recognised the laudable feats of the current executives of the committee led by Olutusin to attain remarkable strides at the local and national levels of the council.
The NCRIB president noted that the theme of the end of year lecture is apt, as it is imperative for the local chapters to always connect with the centre to promote the council.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the sidelines of the event was the presentation of awards to the past leaders of the area committee and outstanding members who have contributed to the growth of area committee over the years.
