Gov. Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau, has congratulated Mrs Ayuku Pwaspo, who was elected the State Council Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), the first female to occupy the position.
Mutfwang conveyed his congratulatory message in a statement issued by his Director of Press and Public Affairs, Mr Gyang Bere, on Tuesday in Jos.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that Pwaspo of the Plateau Radio Television Corporation (PRTVC) Chapel, polled 121 votes, to defeat Mr Ralph Madugu, of Impact chapel, who scored 114 votes during the council re-run election on Thursday.
The two chairmanship candidates had a tie with 114 votes each, during the council election on Sept. 8, hence the rerun.
The governor described Pwaspo’s victory as a significant milestone for the pen profession, and encouraged her to foster unity amongst members in the interest of the union.
He acknowledged the invaluable contribution of the NUJ to the growth and development of democracy in Plateau, and Nigeria at large.
He urged members of the Plateau council to uphold the ethical standards guiding the profession, and ensure diligent discharge of duties.
Mutfwang also congratulated other newly elected officials of the council, and urged them to prioritise the welfare and rights of journalists in Plateau.
He expressed confidence in their ability to ensure a conducive environment for journalists to thrive in the profession, and wished them a successful tenure.
NAN also reports that another female, Mary Domtur, of the NTA Chapel, emerged Secretary of the council.
