People in Iran are commemorating the death of Jina Mahsa Amini this Saturday, the woman whose death last September sparked nationwide outrage and united an entire protest movement.

The 22-year-old woman was arrested by the country’s notorious morality police a year ago for allegedly violating the strict Islamic dress code.

She fell into a coma under unexplained circumstances and died on Sept. 16, 2022.

Her death triggered large-scale protests all across the country.

The slogan “Woman, Life, Freedom” took off, especially amongst Iran’s younger generation, as a symbol of protest against the country’s repressive policies.

Security forces violently quashed the protests that paralysed the nation for several months.

There have been no calls for protests in the run-up to the anniversary of Amini’s death, out of fear that security forces would use violence again.

Residents in the Kurdish areas nevertheless plan to commemorate the day, with some shops closing out of solidarity.

According to eyewitnesses, security forces and military units have been deployed to towns around Amini’s hometown of Saghes.

Security forces have been bracing themselves in other big cities too, in the event of fresh protests.

Rallies and demonstrations are meanwhile planned across the globe to mark the anniversary.
