Germany’s surprise basketball World Cup title will have a positive effect on the domestic league, according to general manager Marko Pešić from top club Bayern Munich.
“The league is certainly already benefiting from it because it is partly owing to the clubs’ work. I think we are all on a very good path,” Pešić told dpa ahead of Wednesday’s Bundesliga season start.
The managing director of the title favourites also sees a new TV contract with new media partner Dyn as a sign that interest has grown over the past few years even before the World Cup title.
“The way we are developing, you can put it under the motto ‘slowly but surely.’ We are on a good path and we have to stay on that path,” Pešić said.
Germany won the World Cup in Asia earlier this month for the first time, winning all eight games, beating five-time winners United States in the semi-finals and Serbia in the final.
“The World Cup title gives us a boost and tailwind,” the league’s managing director Stefan Holz said.
