Mr Tunde Rahman, Media Officer to the President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has shared the inspiring story of an MBA programme he has just concluded at the University of Leicester, UK.
According to him, although the programme was very demanding, the university has a solid and pragmatic system that saves students some tears.
For one, he said, he could not attend the convocation due to the demands of the recent general elections in Nigeria, but his certificate was swiftly mailed to him at no cost.
This, many Nigerians will recall, is a rarity in several institutions in the country as graduates often have to go through stress to collect certificates, transcripts and other related documents.
Here is how Rahman, a respected editor and publisher, tells his sweet story in a Facebook post:
“After three years of painstaking efforts – glancing through materials on Leicester Blackboard in between work, closing late nights only to resume at home behind the computer, attending lectures, masterclasses and workshops, undertaking group or team tasks, reading, researching, sharing ideas, taking examinations and occasional travels to Leicester – it’s now in the kitty: MBA from the University of Leicester.
“A few times, I felt like quitting. I carried on nonetheless. The more I did the more punishing and challenging it became. I completed it, making the second Masters after the MSC Communications from the Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo.
“One or two things are remarkable. One, the lectures are conversational and interactive. As much as they want to impart knowledge and let you into new developments and trends with appropriate case studies, they are also eager to understand and learn from your own perspectives and situations.
“Two, their processes are seamless and structured to suit every situation and circumstance. For instance, I could not make the graduation on January 19 because we were in the middle of preparations for the election and it was too close to the February 25 poll, but my certificate was mailed to me at no extra cost. To God be the glory, I received it in my house yesterday.
“We have a lot to do to reform our education, the curricular, the systems and processes, President-elect Bola Tinubu, the National Assembly, University authorities, teachers and students all have a lot to do. We can’t just continue like this. The quality of education is daily going South. We all have a responsibility to halt the drift!”
Until his appointment, Rahman was the publisher of WESTERN POST, a regional newspaper, which covered the defunct Western region, comprising Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Oyo, Lagos, Ekiti, Lagos, Delta and Edo States.
He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science, a Post Graduate Diploma in Journalism and a Master of Science Degree in Communication Studies. He also attended course at the Lagos Business School.
Rahman began his journalism career in 1989 as Political Correspondent of Lagos Horizon, a community newspaper, and later moved to the old Daily Times where he rose to position of Political Editor.
He later moved to the Punch newspapers as the News Editor/Assistant Editor at its Abuja office and then Group News Editor at its headquarters in Lagos.
He quit the Punch in 2004 to join THISDAY as Deputy Editor of the Sunday title, during which he pioneered the political arm of the paper called CICERO.

Mr. Rahman later became the Deputy Editor of the daily newspaper and then the Editor of the Saturday and Sunday titles.
He had resigned from THISDAY to float the WESTERN POST newspaper.
