As millions of Nigerians continue to suffer trying to get their money saved in banks, due to the Central Bank of Nigeria’s messy redesign, there are indications that the cash crunch is affecting Muslims observing Ramadan.
The Jama’atu Izalatul Bid’ah Wa Iqamatus Sunnah in Bauchi State, on Friday, made this known as it appealed to the Federal Government to make naira notes available during the very important Islamic month.
The Chairman, Tafsir Committee Kasuwan Shanu JIBWS mosque, Alhaji Hassan Gwani, made the appeal during the opening of this year’s annual Ramadan tafsir.
He said, “Ramadan is here again and the currency meant for daily purchases is not available thereby making the situation difficult for people to buy what they need.
“If the FG wants the policy to be received with open arms and successful, the new naira notes should be made available for people to spend.”
Meanwhile, the CBN has said it will make money available, saying commercial banks would have to open on weekends too.
This apparently followed a threat to picket it by the Nigerian Labour Congress as the bank had only lamely obeyed the Supreme Court’s order to make cash available.
