An American sports reporter, Grant Wahl, has collapsed and died in Qatar where he was covering the World Cup.

Wahl was the journalist earlier detained at the Qatar World Cup for wearing a rainbow shirt that spoke for LGBT rights but offended Qatar’s law against the sex choice.

The 48-year-old died on Friday while covering the quarter-finals in Doha, according to reports.

Mourning him, US Soccer said, “Grant made soccer his life’s work, and we are devastated that he and his brilliant writing will no longer be with us.”

He was also reported to have earlier noted he had a serious health issue.

He noted in his newsletter: that he’d gone to a clinic at the media center in Qatar, “and they said I probably have bronchitis.

“My body finally broke down on me. Three weeks of little sleep, high stress and lots of work can do that to you… I could feel my upper chest take on a new level of pressure and discomfort.”
