Parents and other stakeholders have a lesson to learn from the twin tragedy that hit Nigeria on Sunday.

The same day Ifeanyi, son of music star Davido and Chioma, reportedly drowned in a swimming pool in Lagos, the Kano State Fire Service confirmed on Monday that a 17-year-old boy drowned at Titin Jajira in Tofa Local Government Area of the state on Sunday.

Although the natures of the water bodies in which the incident happened are different, the cause is arguably the same.

This is more so as the rate of drowning appears to be on the increase.

In 2018, another Nigerian music giant, D’Banj, had lost his son, Daniel Jr., when the boy drowned in his swimming pool.

While governments need to be more responsible in the provision of tap water to stem the tide of deaths in ponds, wells etc., there seems to be need for more vigilance on the part of parents, hotels, schools and others who own swimming pools.

Meanwhile, Spokesperson for the Kano agency, Alhaji Saminu Abdullahi, stated that the service’s rescue team brought the boy out of a pond, but was later confirmed dead by a doctor.

“The corpse was handed over to the police at Bachirawa Police Divisional headquarter,’’ he stated.

The fire service would continue to investigate the incident, Abdullahi added.

Davido has yet to speak on the tragedy in his household but some of his celebrity friends have been sympathising with him.
