Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has said that the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party have decided not to do what he considers to be the right thing because they are banking on a powerful man in the Presidency.
He was talking about his insistence that the PDP’s Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, should resign since he is from the North as the presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.
Explaining his position while inaugurating a satellite campus
Of the Rivers State University of Port Harcourt in Ahoada on Thursday – the third he would unveil in three days – he said leaders were adamant because they were banking on someone.
He, however, punctured the alleged deal, saying a recent experience had shown that nothing was automatic.
Wike said, “You will see. Why are they being so arrogant? They are arrogant because they believe somebody is backing them. What they have forgotten is that the same person backing them in the Presidency backed somebody during the APC primary and the person lost.
“They say ‘for interest’ of Nigeria. Who defines the interest of Nigeria? You who cannot obey the Constitution of your party?”
He added that he was committed to the fight as he believes no one can do any negative thing to him.
“What will they do to me? Remove me as governor? Try it if you can. Nobody should be afraid. This fight, we fight to the end,” he said.
He also wrote off the decision to change the party’s Board of Trustees’ Chairman. According to him, the matter on the ground is not about the BOT.
“They have told the BOT to resign? What is BOT? It is an advisory body. Not decision-making. It is the Chairman and President who make decisions. The President is from the North, the Chairman is from the North. Who will represent the South’s in decision-making?
“We said you can’t take the two main positions of the party. You now say you have a four-year- tenure. Yet you made a promise that if the presidential candidate emerged from the North, you were going to resign. What has killed Nigerians are leaders who cannot honour what they have promised the people.”
