The All Progressives Congress keeps its hope to retain power in 2023 alive on Wednesday as its presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, visited former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Wednesday.
As Tinubu meets Obasanjo in the Penthouse of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Oke- Mosan, Abeokuta, the Director of the Tinubu-Shettima Campaign Organisation, Simon Lalong, got pardon from the Catholic Church after his apology over the reference he made to the Pope in a recent interview.
The party continues sorting things out as the election approaches, unlike its rival, Peoples Democratic Party, in which appears to have been slowed down by a rift between its candidate, Abubakar Atiku, and runners-up in the primary election, Nyesom Wike.
How influential Obasanj’s support has been has yet to be verified but politicians have the habit of visiting him.
He is not known to command a huge grassroots appeal.
His international network is however believed to be strong.
Tinubu was received by Governor Dapo Abiodun, former Governor Gbenga Daniel, his predecessor, Segun Osoba, and other Ogun State government functionaries.
Meanwhile, the Catholic Archbishop of Jos, Most Revd Matthew Audu, told Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau State that the church had forgiven him over his recent comment on the Pope, saying his “apology has been accepted.”
Archbishop Audu, however, urged the governor to work at making a difference in politics, stressing that the Church encourages members to go into politics and not do anything to disgrace the church.
Speaking yesterday at the 19th General Assembly of the Archdiocese of Jos, at the St. Louis Parish Jos with the theme ‘‘The Eucharist our Strength Towards a Better Nigeria” the Archbishop stressed the significance of the Eucharist that makes provision for Christians to follow the footsteps of Jesus Christ and work towards sacrificial service, honesty diligent and kindness.
“As you know, our President of the Catholic Bishops Conference, has already accepted your apology and so it goes for all of us. We have accepted it.”
