Deposed Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido, has said that he warned the Buhari government that the economic policy it was embarking on would prove destructive.
According to him, he wrote the government but it turned deaf ears.
Sanusi spoke at the weekend during the staging of a play in his honour, ‘ Emir Sanusi’, written and directed by Ahmed Yerima.
He said that he had always felt the urge to speak truth to power, even when he was an emir.
He said even as a monarch, he had the right and duty to talk whenever he had something important to say, saing being an emir did not mean he could not criticise the authorities.
‘This country will not move forward unless the people own the government,” he said.
He, however, said he never went to the public without first speaking with concerned authorities in private.
According to him, during the Jonathan era, when he was the Governor of the Central Bank, all he did was write a confidential letter to the President, concerning the alleged missing petrol money.
“It was after nothing was done about it after five months that the letter got leaked,” he added, noting that it was not by him.
