President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed the pioneer Vice Chancellor of the First Technical University, Ibadan, Professor Ayobami Salami, as a Resident Electoral Commissioner of the Independent Electoral Commission.
The former Vice Chancellor, Academics, at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, completed his tenure at Tech-U in May 2022, and has been succeeded by Professor Sola Ajayi.
During the five years he was the VC, he gave the university a solid foundation as it blossomed academically and infrastructurally.
The National University Commission rated Tech-U the 6th best state university and the 25th nationally.
Salami’s name is among those of the 19 nominees the President sent to the Senate for confirmation and he is designated to work in Oyo State.
The confirmation request to the upper chamber was contained in a letter dated 25 July 2022 and read read at plenary by the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan.
The other nominees include Ibrahim Abdullahi (Adamawa – Renewal); Obo Effanga (Cross River – Renewal); Umar Ibrahim (Taraba – Renewal); Agboke Olaleke (Ogun – Renewal); and Samuel Egwu, a professor, (Kogi – Renewal).
Others are Onyeka Ugochi (Imo); Muhammad Bashir (Sokoto); Zango Abdu (Katsina); Queen Agwu (Ebonyi); and Agundu Tersoo (Benue).
Also to be confirmed are: Yomere Oritsemlebi (Delta); Yahaya Ibrahim, a professor, (Kaduna); Nura Ali (Kano); Agu Uchenna (Enugu); Ahmed Garki (FCT); Hudu Yunusa (Bauchi); Uzochukwu Chijioke, a professor, (Anambra); and Mohammed Nura (Yobe).
According to Buhari, the request for the confirmation of the nominees is in accordance with the provisions of Section 154 (1) of the Nigerian Constitution.
He explained that the nomination of five Resident Electoral Commissioners is for renewal, while the other 14 are fresh appointments.
