The Japanese city of Sapporo will not conduct a referendum on its bid for the 2030 Winter Olympics.
The city council on Monday rejected an according motion from the communist party.
The local government is dominated by the conservative Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) which also governs the nation with Fumio Kishida as prime minister.
A recent survey said that 52.2 per cent of the locals supported a bid to host the Winter Games a second time, the first being in 1972.
Japan’s capital Tokyo hosted last year’s summer Games.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has said it plans to name the 2030 host at its session next year in Mumbai.

Also interested are 2010 hosts Vancouver, 2002 hosts Salt Lake City and Pyrenees-Barcelona.
Under new bid rules, the IOC names its preferred candidate and starts a targeted dialogue.
If that is successful, the IOC executive board proposes the bidder for election by the session.
