Psychiatrist warns youths against taking substance that ruins future

Dr Olalekan Oginni, a Consultant Psychiatrist at College of Health Sciences, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has warned youths against taking substance that can ruin their lives.
Oginni gave the warning during an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Saturday, in Ile-Ife.
He noted that the number of youths suffering for mental health disorder in the society was more than the aged.
The Psychiatrist explained that at times genetic disposition could cause mental disorder, saying that some might have genetic disposition and fortunate not end up in madness.
Oginni added that environmental stress could also cause mental health disorder, when a child was not parentally cared for in terms of food, clothe and sheltered, but struggling for his dear life could lead to madness.
The Consultant stressed that eating substances at tender age, drinking too much alcohol, smoking of cigarettes, among other immoralities, could trigger them for mental health problem.
He warned teenagers against such, adding that their brains were more sensitive to those substance and could lead to longer health mental problem.
According to him, unpalatable experiences like economic recession, kidnapping, rituals, yahoo plus, when things are not getting better across the country and life is getting worsen, among other challenges facing Nigeria, can lead to mental health disorder for younger ones.
The Psychiatrist appealed to parents to take good care of their children by providing for their needs both academically, physically, spiritually, maritally, financially and show them love with proper monitoring could save them from trauma.

“Desist from eating weeds that can damage your future, engage yourselves with something legally, stop waiting for somebody to help you always.
“But have the mindset of do something that would help yourself as well as society at large.” He counselled.
