If there is any golden desire reigning in Adeyisola Oluwafunmilayo Adekanye’s innermost heart, it is the one to become Miss World. Well, she wants to excel in her academics too. But as a beauty queen and model, she has her eyes on the pinnacle of the industry.
And she seems to have all it takes to be the best. The 500 Level Medical Engineering Student at the First Technical University , Ibadan, is naturally pretty. Call her a born-model, and you would not be wrong. Hers is a beauty that commands attention, the one that strikes. This she crowns up with a high level of intelligence and good moral as well as social standing. It is such qualities that have seen her grow steadily as a model. She launched into pageantry in 2016 and, six years after, she has some laurels to show.
In 2020, Adeyisola emerged Miss Intellect Universe (Runner-Up), while she has also won the Miss Beautiful Lady Nigeria and Face of Western Nigeria. Currently, she is a finalist in the Miss Eko International pageant – with the theme, Chronicles of a Beauty Queen – holding at Oriental Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos, on July 10. She is hoping to emerge top at the show.
In an interview anchored by seasoned journalist, poet and Public Relations Officer of Tech-U, Akeem Lasisi, Adeyisola, who is popularly called ‘Funmi’ on campus, says she was inspired by Agbani Darego’s 2013 victory at Miss World. The interview is also substantially in the latest edition of Tech-Life, the university’s magazine.
“Her story tells me that when you set your mind at a goal and you work towards it, you can surely get it,” she says. “If Agbani Darego could win it then, then I too can win it and become the second Nigeria’s Miss World.”
As it happens in the life of other big dreamers and goal getters, there are some challenges that Adeyisola faces as she grows. First, she has to ensure that her academics progresses well. So, she has to manage her time well and strike a balance. Second, she says, many people have a negative perception about the model world. According to her, such people see the sector as one with low moral value. They think every model is loose, she says.
That is why she has had to convince her parents that her involvement in the sector is for positivity while he education programmes will also not suffer.
She adds, “Truly speaking, many people have a negative impression about beauty contests and modelling. And, based on some of the negative tendencies there, the fear can be real. The only thing is that one should understand the reason one is in there. One should be principled, bold, wise and insist on doing things right. If you observe these factors, you will achieve your dream, even if it takes time. So far, the Eko International Beauty Contest has been unfolding with high ethical values and everyone is very happy with that.”
Adeyisola has also proved her talent at dancing and some acting. She showcased this in the video of poetic tributes that Lasisi produced for Tech-U, including ‘Agbamurere’ and ‘Total Education’, in which she participated along some other students. Also recently, she played the role of ‘Kisimo’ in a yet-to-be-released poetry video by the same poet and P.R.O.
Meanwhile, voting is still on for the Miss Eko International contest, with Adeyisola asking all and sundry to show her love by voting for her.
