In realizing the regional integration agenda of ECOWAS, Justice Edward Asante, President, ECOWAS Court of Justice has challenged Cape Verde citizens to avail themselves of employment opportunities in ECOWAS institutions.
Asante threw the challenge at a dinner at the just concluded ECOWAS Court’s International Conference in Cape Verde which was organised toward strengthening the Regional Integration agenda.
Asante urged them to avail themselves of the employment opportunities with the 15-member Community in order to help mitigate the shortage of Portuguese speaking staff members in the Commission and Community institutions.
The Court’s President said that by availing themselves of the existing opportunities of working with the Community, they would be contributing to deepening the country’s involvement in West Africa.
“There is a dearth of Portuguese speaking Community citizens in the Commission and institutions of the Community which are needed to fully reflect the trilingual nature of the Community.
“When you make yourselves available for these employment opportunities, it will enhance integration with more Lexiphones in community’s institutions,” Asante said.
Asante used the opportunity to commend the host government for its contribution to the four-day conference, particularly President JoseNeves for finding the time to open the conference.
In her remarks, Dr Joana Rosa, Cape Verde’s Minister of Justice spoke of the country’s interest in deepening its integration in the Community.
Rosa said this would enable the Country to share in the challenges and benefits of the community as evidenced by the hosting of the conference.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that some 150 participants drawn from the academia, jurists and lawyers from the Community participated in the conference.

The Conference, with the theme “ECOWAS Integration Model: the legal implications of regionalism, sovereignty and supranationalism”, examined issues under seven sub themes that dealt with several dimensions of ECOWAS integration.
