The Police in Lagos have dragged a 27-year-old mechanic, Kehinde Quadri, before an Ogudu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State over alleged theft of a POS machine, recharge cards and cash.
The defendant was arraigned before Magistrate M.O. Tanimola on a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.
He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The prosecutor, Insp Donjour Perezi, told the court that the defendant and another still at large committed the offences on May 6 at Mile 12 area of Ketu, a suburb of Lagos.
He alleged that they stole a POS machine valued N80, 000 and the sum of N104, 000, recharge cards.
“On May 9, the complainant; Mr Akintobi Abimbola, who runs a POS business, reported at the Ketu Police Station that on May 6, the defendant introduced one Jubril to him so that he could employ him as a sales boy.
“Jubril started work with Mr Abimbola same day.
“The following day, May 7, it was discovered that the boy had made away with a cash sum of N104, 000, a POS machine valued N80,000, the N22,000 cash loaded inside the machine and some recharge cards worth N21, 000.
“All the stolen items are estimated to be N227,000,” the prosecutor said.
According to Perezi, the defendant, who stood as a surety at the Ketu Police Station for the said Jubril, who is now at large, is alleged to have connived with him to abscond with the stated amount and the POS machine .
The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Sections 287 and 411 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.
The court granted the defendant bail in the sum of N80,000, with one surety in like sum.
The court directed the prosecutor to verify the address of the surety to ascertain that it is genuine.
She adjourned the case until June 3 for mention.
