A medical professional, Dr. Shomade Taofeek, has urged Nigerians to embrace health insurance scheme to improve their access to better healthcare.
Taofeek, Chief Medical Director, State Hospital Ota, Ogun, gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Ota, Ogun.
According to him, both the state and federal governments are already using health insurance to assist their workers to have access to quality medical care for themselves and family members.
“This advice has become necessary to Nigerians because the cost of getting medical treatment is rising and healthcare cost will be affordable with the adoption of the scheme.
“We should all key into the scheme and by so access to health services will be within reach of the average citizens.
“Nigerians should take advantage of the health insurance system because it holds the prospects of improving access to healthcare and makes cost of getting care easier,” he said.
NAN reports that President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday signed the 2022 National Health Insurance Authority Bill into law.
The newly signed law makes health insurance mandatory for Nigerians and it repealed the 2004 National Health Insurance Scheme Act, Cap. N42, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria.
“Let us challenge the healthcare insurance system by embracing it then see whether it works or not,” Taofeek said.

He urged the media to support in the propagation of the benefits of adopting the health insurance scheme, adding “sensitising the populace to the scheme is important.”
Taofeek added that the Ogun government had instituted procedures to facilitate the scheme in the state for its workers and all its inhabitants.
